REFLECT ABOUT READING and ANSWER THE QUESTION

Reflect about reading 1

The future of CALL will depend on many factors one of these important factors are technological change.

To be able to explain and discuss the technological change you should know more about technological determinism and the relationship between them. Technological determinism hold that like weather, technology is autonomous and it causes social change.
In the research, Mark Warschauer  mention ten development in information and communication technology and also the five areas which expected to effect on English teaching of these future developments. The five areas are : new contexts, new literacies, new genres, new identities, and new pedagogies.

From what I read , there has three stages of CALL the first one is structural CALL and the second is communicative CALL and the last one is integrative CALL .
From my side I think that  , the CALL makes software the most powerful language learning
resource available anywhere. After all, it can do all that a book can offer, all that audio and video
 cassettes can include.
In my own opinion , C.A.L.L. has still not come of age. The most powerful learning tool is still not
  widely used in my country.

      1)What is Technological determinism?
Technological determinism refers to the idea that the introduction of new   technology automatically brings certain results.
2)What are the ten developments in Information and Communication Technology?

1_ phone-based to wireless communication because of improved technology and
              telephone/Internet relay facilities.
2_ a move from dial-up Internet connections to permanent, direct online connections.
3_ the use of mainly personal computers to the use of portable computing and online devices.
4_ referring to the speed at which information passes over communication lines.
5_ expensive personal computing systems to widely affordable computers and other
hardware, first in the developed countries and then in the developing countries.
6_ the Internet will change from being an exclusive form of communication and information,
mostly limited to people in developed countries, to becoming a mass form of communication
accessible to most of the planet.
7_ a movement from text-based information and communication to audiovisual forms of information and communication.
8_ use of English as the main online language to multilingual Internet use.
9_  “non-native” to “native” users of information technology
10_ the movement of CALL from the language laboratory to the classroom.
3)What is the expected effect on English teaching of these likely future developments?

Five areas will be examined: new contexts, new literacies, new genres, new
        identities,and new pedagogies.
4)What is meant by the five areas examined: new contexts, new literacies, new genres, new identities, and new pedagogies?
New Contexts: The projected developments of ICT will have a profound influence on the context
       in which English is taught.
New Literacies: This leads to another likely result of ICT developments.
New Genres: Similar changes are occurring with respect to writing.
New Identities: The increased importance of online communication is also contributing to new kinds of identities.
New Pedagogies: We must now consider the new pedagogies that these changes will elicit.
5)What are the first three stages of CALL mentioned in the reading?
1_ Structural CALL  2_ Communicative CALL 3_ Integrative CALL

6)Then, on a separate paragraph, state whether the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has witnessed the same ten developments in ICT. Did the five areas emerge in the Kingdom? What is the expected  effect on English teaching of these likely future developments?
In the last five years  the kingdom of Saudi Arabia start to use the ten developments  in ICT
The  most powerful learning tool is still not widely used. I think that the areas will appear now but not everywhere . For example, you probably can't now do a language degree in a Yanbu University

without using a computer at some point, but the majority of study time is still spent with
traditional materials. A positive effect will be expected on English teaching. Students have a good
balance between theory and practice. also offers ample opportunities to practice and work with
it. Finally, remove the need for teacher and student to be in the same room, teachers can
continue to help their learners for years after the initial course contact.
