“Challenges of creating web-based activites in Sally Morrison” Interactive lanaguge Learning on the Web”

Nowadays, internet is the major tool to connects people together around the world. Using the internet will make life's activities more easily specially on learning So, teachers in Saudi Arabia should creating web- based language activities, quizzes ,materials to help the student learn how to use this  technology.

There are many difficulties to create your own interactive language learning activities in the Web.These difficulties include maybe the teachers don't know how to create the web then they should be learn how to do it which take a lot of the time and effort.Students don't deal with this type of education in the begging because they are familiarity of traditional education and fear of change. lack of equipment for students in schools, where the use of computers are expensive and not available everywhere. Finally , technical problems as a result of weakness of the internet.

In conclusion, teachers play a major role in developing the country by educating the generations after generation. Accordingly, They should utilize all possible tools and technologies  to deliver their message in a way that will be interesting for all.

“Normalisation of Bax in the Saudi Kingdom

In the article of Stephan Bax we found that he discussed the development of the CALL through the past, present and future. Also, he found the three phases of CALL which divided previously by Mark Warschauer.

This article seeks answers to three questions: where has Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) been, where is it now and where is it going?

He suggested three steps for this normalized state and after that move across it. The first one is to find the norms factors which normalization requires.  The second is to canvass the practice of teaching sequence in the light of these norms. the final is to set our current practice in each part so as to promote normalization.

a-Bax suggested we will achieve normalization when computers are used every day in our classrooms of learning language by students and teachers. He also suggested that to achieve normalization we have to find what are the criteria we need to reach normalization. Second step is to evaluate what each teaching context need for its practices according to the criteria we'd identify in the first step. The last step is to try our best to set what we use now in teaching so we promote normalization.

b-Normalization is the stage when a technology is invisible, hardly even recognized as a technology,

How these changes and means could be applied to our Saudi context? Why is it possible? When is it possible/reached/achieved? How will it be reached?

Nowdays in saudi schools, changes start gradually apply to our Saudi context, but we just need some time. It possible becouse The ministry of education allow and has a possibilities to provides these technologies. Nowadays Many colleges and universities  in Saudi Arabia start using technologies nowadays like computers, projectors, smart boards, and tablet as an important tools. Also model schools are start to provide to their students a laptops to do their homework. I think will  be reached by Give students a computer to use it to do the work. Secondly, When students can use it in a proper way. Also, When Ministry of Education provides all of the technologies that the teachers and students need it. Finally, Create educational programs or educational websites so the students can get their lessons and homework and if they have any question they can ask and the teacher or the classmate will reply.

Pronunciation skill

Pronunciation skill

Pronunciation is essential for speaking and understanding spoken English well. It should be the FIRST thing you learn when studying a language. You should focus not only on how to make the different sounds ,but also how to hear the sounds. The  people find production difficult for many reason like:  Many sounds in English are not in your native language. For example, the 'th' sound and the 'r' sound are difficult for many speakers, Combinations of sounds can be hard to pronounce. These include 'consonant clusters', Syllable structure can vary a lot. In many languages the structure is a lot simpler, for example: Consonant Vowel Consonant Vowel, Words are not pronounced the way they are spelt and Words change their pronunciation when in a sentence.

I find this two website for practices how to pronounce the word correctly. It is too benefit and helpful for learner and who interesting in English language.

In the two website, There are a system of symbols for writing the sounds of English. We have a guide to these symbols and also videos to show how to pronounce each of the sounds. There are also activities to practice identifying the difference between certain sounds which may sound similar. Interactive quizzes to test your knowledge of and help you learn about English pronunciation.
Children able to use it from 4 to 10 years.

There is some activity in this website:

1)  Key and Pin[ I ] [i:]:

in this activity the learner able to click the listen button to hear each word below. They all have the same /i:/ sound as key. When you think you can identify the sound click continue.

 2) videos:

The learner able to show video about the how to pronounce it the long and short vowel and have a chance to repeat the sound . I think it is a useful to know the sound of each letter.

3) Vowels:

Students look at an image of a phoneme and then try to find the same phoneme in one of the following words. This can be done with students working alone or in groups or even as part of a class pronunciation practice game. It makes learning the phonetic alphabet, which is so important for ESL students, more enjoyable.

social networking sites

What is your most important reason for using social networking sites?
The main reason for using social networking sites  are to help you meet up with new people and socialize. Some are created to help you find old friends. Others are there to help you in some way. Other reason maybe people using social networking sites like: Friendship, community, a sense of belonging. Help with a problem or information on a condition you may have. People who like the same things you like, or listen to the same music you listen to, or need the same thing you need, A place to add your photos, let people view your videos and listen to your favorite music.

Is it possible for you to use them in teaching EFL/ESL? Concrete example?
Yes, it is possible for me to use social networking sites. For example: the applications that exist in smart phone can help in teaching ESL and EFL like, learn English grammar or English vocabulary  in apple apps. teacher  Can share videos and picture with students that are helpful to them.
Also Students shared their work on a variety of platforms. On Flickr, they tagged their artwork with "artmooc." On Twitter, they included the #artmooc hashtag. Others posted to Facebook, and continue to do so to this day, even though the course has been over for quite sometime.

REFLECT ABOUT READING and ANSWER THE QUESTION

Reflect about reading 1

The future of CALL will depend on many factors one of these important factors are technological change.

To be able to explain and discuss the technological change you should know more about technological determinism and the relationship between them. Technological determinism hold that like weather, technology is autonomous and it causes social change.
In the research, Mark Warschauer  mention ten development in information and communication technology and also the five areas which expected to effect on English teaching of these future developments. The five areas are : new contexts, new literacies, new genres, new identities, and new pedagogies.

From what I read , there has three stages of CALL the first one is structural CALL and the second is communicative CALL and the last one is integrative CALL .
From my side I think that  , the CALL makes software the most powerful language learning
resource available anywhere. After all, it can do all that a book can offer, all that audio and video
 cassettes can include.
In my own opinion , C.A.L.L. has still not come of age. The most powerful learning tool is still not
  widely used in my country.

      1)What is Technological determinism?
Technological determinism refers to the idea that the introduction of new   technology automatically brings certain results.
2)What are the ten developments in Information and Communication Technology?

1_ phone-based to wireless communication because of improved technology and
              telephone/Internet relay facilities.
2_ a move from dial-up Internet connections to permanent, direct online connections.
3_ the use of mainly personal computers to the use of portable computing and online devices.
4_ referring to the speed at which information passes over communication lines.
5_ expensive personal computing systems to widely affordable computers and other
hardware, first in the developed countries and then in the developing countries.
6_ the Internet will change from being an exclusive form of communication and information,
mostly limited to people in developed countries, to becoming a mass form of communication
accessible to most of the planet.
7_ a movement from text-based information and communication to audiovisual forms of information and communication.
8_ use of English as the main online language to multilingual Internet use.
9_  “non-native” to “native” users of information technology
10_ the movement of CALL from the language laboratory to the classroom.
3)What is the expected effect on English teaching of these likely future developments?

Five areas will be examined: new contexts, new literacies, new genres, new
        identities,and new pedagogies.
4)What is meant by the five areas examined: new contexts, new literacies, new genres, new identities, and new pedagogies?
New Contexts: The projected developments of ICT will have a profound influence on the context
       in which English is taught.
New Literacies: This leads to another likely result of ICT developments.
New Genres: Similar changes are occurring with respect to writing.
New Identities: The increased importance of online communication is also contributing to new kinds of identities.
New Pedagogies: We must now consider the new pedagogies that these changes will elicit.
5)What are the first three stages of CALL mentioned in the reading?
1_ Structural CALL  2_ Communicative CALL 3_ Integrative CALL

6)Then, on a separate paragraph, state whether the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has witnessed the same ten developments in ICT. Did the five areas emerge in the Kingdom? What is the expected  effect on English teaching of these likely future developments?
In the last five years  the kingdom of Saudi Arabia start to use the ten developments  in ICT
The  most powerful learning tool is still not widely used. I think that the areas will appear now but not everywhere . For example, you probably can't now do a language degree in a Yanbu University

without using a computer at some point, but the majority of study time is still spent with
traditional materials. A positive effect will be expected on English teaching. Students have a good
balance between theory and practice. also offers ample opportunities to practice and work with
it. Finally, remove the need for teacher and student to be in the same room, teachers can
continue to help their learners for years after the initial course contact.

TERMS TO KNOW AND DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM

TERMS TO KNOW AND DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM

Blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns at least in part through online delivery of content and instruction with some element of student control over time, place, path or pace.

online learning: sometimes referred to as e-learning, is a form of distance education. Online courses are delivered over the Internet and can be accessed from a computer with a Web browser.

e-learning: Distance learning, sometimes called e-learning, is a formalized teaching and learning system specifically designed to be carried out remotely by using electronic communication.

Educational technology: an academic discipline, the study of educational technology prepares individuals by helping them acquire a deeper understanding and mastery of learning resources: messages, people, materials, devices, techniques and settings.

Netiquette: represents the importance of proper manners and behavior online. In general, netiquette is the set of professional and social etiquettes practiced and advocated in electronic communication over any computer network.

A Learning Management System (LMS): is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of e-learning education courses or training programs.

D-Learning is a mode of delivering education and instruction, often on an individual basis, to students who are not physically present in a traditional setting such as a classroom.

The different between LMS and E-learning is LMS for the administration, documentation, tracking and reporting. On other hand ,E-learning for learner is a formalized teaching and learning system.

The different between netiquette and learning plan is netiquette The social code of network communication that users can follow to improve their online experience. Planned learning is teaching online and face to face that is used to plan learning.
